Poetry is a literary form that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language, such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre, to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning. It is an art form where human language is used for its aesthetic qualities in addition to, or instead of, its notional and semantic content.

Poetry has a long history dating back to prehistoric times with hunting poetry in Africa, and panegyric and elegiac court poetry was developed extensively throughout the history of the empires of the Nile, Niger and Volta river valleys.

Poetry can be divided into lines on a page, in a process known as lineation, along a spectrum of greater and lesser formality. Some poetry is free verse with no concern for rhyme or meter, and other forms are more structured, adhering to a set pattern of meter, line length, and rhyme scheme.

What makes a good poem can be subjective and varies from person to person, but there are generally accepted qualities of good poetry:

  1. Strong, Powerful Imagery
Good poetry often includes vivid imagery and descriptive language that immerses readers in the scene.
  2. Emotional Depth
The poem should evoke emotion in the reader, whether it be joy, sadness, fear or nostalgia.
  3. Originality
Great poetry offers a new and unique perspective on the world.
  4. Skillful Use of Language
Word choice, syntax, punctuation, rhyme, rhythm—all should be used effectively to convey the intended message and evoke the desired response.
  5. Ability to Evoke Reflection
Good poetry often leaves the reader with something to think about. It might challenge your perceptions, beliefs, or understanding, or make you see something in a new light.
  6. Universality
Even though a poem may be written about a very personal event or feeling, it should be relatable and have universal appeal.

Remember that poetry is extremely subjective. What one person considers to be a good poem, another might disagree. These qualities are just generally accepted guidelines.
